How I got started in ABA
So I was working as a nanny at the age of 17 for a little boy with low functioning autism. While working with him the family could not afford to pay for their private pay BCBA and me. So they let him go for a little while. While he was gone I taught my boy to dress himself, feed himself, ask for things using 1 word request.... About 4 months later the BCBA was able to come back. I knew nothing about ABA but was told to do the assessment with the BCBA. At the assessment the BCBA was shocked by everything my baby could do that he couldn't do 4 months before. I was offered a job on the spot. My first day working with a client in ABA was my 18th birthday.
My Expierence
Since getting started in ABA 12 years ago I have worked with kids ages 1-27. I have LOVED my job. I have worked with low functioning and high functioning children with Autism and everything in between. I have worked with individuals with Aggression, SIB, Eloping, Property Destruction, Yelling, Cussing, Tantrums, Lack of Social Skills, Lack of Compliance, Lack of Communication, and soo soo much more.
The highlights of my career are potty training a teenager in 3 days, having a client win "most improved" for his school after working with him for just 6 months, and having a kid finally understand how to blend words (aka read) after trying to teach him for 4 years!
Outside of Work
Outside of work I am a mom. I adopted my son through foster care in 2022. He has high functioning ASD and receives ABA from another company. I also am married to an amazing man named Jordan who is also an ABA therapist. On top of that I am an aunt to 3 young nephews. I have a sister who is an ABA therapist, a sis who is a ESL teacher, and then have 2 brothers (5 of us total). My mom is also a ABA therapist. In my spare time (ha!) I like to make jewelry, paint, go to the beach, volunteer at church, and quilt.
